As of March 2014, Maryland passed a law stating that insurance companies would pay for Applied Behavior Analysis for individuals under the age of 19 years old. To determine whether or not your insurance company provides this coverage you must know what type of policy you have. Pathfinders for Autism has put together a list of questions to help you determine what type of policy you have. Here is a link to help you verify whether or not your insurance plan covers these critical services.
STEPS Behavioral Health is happy to work with your family to help obtain insurance coverage for services. We currently are working with the following providers:
- Carefirst BlueCross BlueShield
- Magellan Behavioral Health
- United Healthcare
- Cigna
- Aetna Coverage
- Medicaid
Please call your insurance company to determine whether or not your specific plan has this benefit. Make sure to talk to the company’s ABA department or specialist to ensure you are getting correct information and find out how to get preauthorization for treatment.
Don’t see your insurance plan?
Please let us know! We are continuing to work with other insurance companies to become in-network providers.

Private Pay Option
You have an option to pay privately for your child’s ABA services. We know they are expensive, however the benefits of ABA services will pay off! Investing in your child’s future will help them be better communicators and more independent. If you can afford to pay privately, please consider doing so. Another option for those living in DC and MD is to consider purchasing a policy for your child through the individual market/health exchange.
