Accepted Insurance Plans

STEPS Behavioral Health accepts most major insurance plans. Contact us with any questions about coverage in Maryland—we’re happy to help you explore your best options.

The assessment process starts when you contact our intake specialist to complete paperwork and schedule an evaluation with a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). This initial assessment, lasting 1-2 hours, is typically scheduled within 45 days of completing the paperwork. After the evaluation, the BCBA develops a treatment plan, reviews it with the family for input, and submits it to the insurance provider. While awaiting approval, a treatment team is assembled. Once coverage is confirmed, therapy begins, with the entire process generally taking about four months.

We offer services for clients ranging from 2 to 21 years old.

  1. For children over 5, we can provide behavioral support in schools that allow it. Many private schools permit ABA therapy, while most public schools do not. Our BCBAs can also attend IEP meetings and conferences to help address any behavioral challenges your child may be facing.
  2. If additional assistance is needed, STEPS Behavioral Health offers advocacy services at an out-of-pocket cost. Please contact our intake coordinator for more details.

Coverage depends on your plan. Medicaid typically covers ABA therapy, while commercial insurance plans may include copays.

ABA therapy (Applied Behavior Analysis) is a research-driven approach that enhances learning and behavior. It helps individuals with autism develop essential life skills by reinforcing positive behaviors and minimizing those that hinder progress.

When practiced correctly, ABA therapy upholds strict ethical guidelines to ensure high-quality care. Professionals adhere to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) Ethics Code, which prioritizes client dignity, individualized treatment, and family collaboration. Research supports ABA as an effective approach to skill development and improving quality of life. Ethical ABA focuses on positive reinforcement, evidence-based strategies, and a person-centered approach to promote independence and growth. Continuous oversight, comprehensive training, and regular evaluations help maintain ethical integrity in every aspect of care.

The amount of ABA therapy needed per week depends on the child’s individual needs. School-aged children typically receive around 15 hours per week, while those enrolled in our Early STEPS program average 30 hours. A minimum of 10 hours per week is required.

A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) is a master’s-level professional responsible for designing, supervising, and adjusting treatment plans to ensure effective therapy. An RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) is a certified professional who works directly with clients, implementing ABA strategies under the guidance of a BCBA. A BT (Behavior Technician) performs similar duties to an RBT but may not yet be certified. They assist in therapy sessions and follow treatment plans under BCBA supervision.
