How In Home ABA Therapy Benefits Children in Laurel

Skill Building in a Natural Setting

Skills are most effectively developed where they naturally occur. In a familiar setting, children learn and generalize important skills such as communication, motor activities, and social interactions, leading to more meaningful progress and long-lasting results.

It's Convenient

There’s no need to travel to clinics—therapy sessions take place right at home, saving time and making it easier for busy families to fit therapy into their schedules.

Family-Centered Support

Caregivers learn practical strategies to support their child’s development throughout daily routines. These strategies promote lasting growth that extends beyond the therapy session.

Our Accepted Insurance Providers

STEPS Behavioral Health works with most major insurance plans. Contact us for any questions regarding coverage in Maryland—we're here to help you explore the best options available.

4 Easy Steps to In-Home Therapy in Laurel

The role of parents and caregivers in the therapy process:

Assessment

The first step is to meet with your BCBA (Board-Certified Behavior Analyst) to discuss your child’s goals. Your BCBA will observe your child's behavior, assess their skills, and identify any challenges they may face.

Development

The second step is for your BCBA (Board-Certified Behavior Analyst) to create a personalized treatment plan that aligns with your child’s and family’s goals. They will work with the therapy team and insurance provider to ensure the most effective treatment is prescribed for your child’s needs.

Therapy

The next step is starting therapy! You and your child will work with the therapy team on the goals and plans developed with the BCBA. You will check in regularly to ensure progress is being made, and you’ll also learn the strategies your child is working on to support their development.

Monitoring

Lastly, we continuously monitor your child’s progress. As part of our regular work, we review the data and adjust your child's plan to ensure it meets their evolving needs and promotes ongoing growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Yes, we offer school-based behavioral support for children over the age of 5 in schools that allow ABA therapy. Many private schools permit this, though most public schools do not. Our BCBAs are also available to attend IEP meetings and conferences to address any behavioral challenges your child may face.
  2. If further assistance is required, STEPS Behavioral Health offers advocacy services for an additional fee. Please reach out to our intake coordinator for more information.

Insurance coverage for ABA therapy varies depending on your plan. Medicaid typically covers ABA therapy, while commercial insurance plans may require copayments. We recommend checking with your provider for specific coverage details.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) helps individuals develop valuable skills that enhance their quality of life. ABA focuses on teaching new, positive behaviors, reinforcing desired actions, and reducing behaviors that disrupt daily life. By using research-backed techniques, ABA tailors interventions to meet the unique needs of each individual. While ABA is commonly used for autism, its principles are also effective in education, mental health, and behavior management.
Absolutely! We provide social skills groups each evening for children over five who participate in ABA therapy. Our Early STEPS program combines one-on-one therapy with group activities and play, tailored to each child’s unique abilities. For older children, we offer opportunities to connect with peers in community settings, helping them practice age-appropriate skills in a relaxed, real-world environment.

The recommended number of ABA therapy hours depends on the individual needs of each child. School-aged children typically receive about 15 hours per week, while those in the Early STEPS program generally receive around 30 hours per week. A minimum of 10 hours per week is required to ensure effective progress.

A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) is a master’s-level professional responsible for designing, supervising, and adjusting treatment plans to ensure therapy is effective. An RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) is a certified professional who directly implements ABA strategies under the supervision of a BCBA. A BT (Behavior Technician) has similar responsibilities to an RBT but may not yet hold certification. They assist in therapy sessions and follow treatment plans under the guidance of a BCBA.

To support ABA therapy at home, start by actively applying the strategies your BCBA provides during therapy sessions. Your BCBA will train you to use techniques that align with your child’s progress. By consistently incorporating these strategies into your daily routines, you can strengthen learning and encourage long-lasting behavioral growth.
ABA therapy is effective for children with autism who face challenges with problem behaviors, daily tasks, or learning new skills. If your child needs support in these areas, ABA therapy could be a great option. Reach out to our team to learn more about how we can help your child succeed.
